It seems to me impossible to get any sound synthesis software running on Ubuntu - tried ZynAddSubFX, Beast, Fluid, none produce any sound. Or have any sound preferences for that matter. No problem with video/sound players, games, or even Windows-games in Wine - just Linux "sound-dedicated" software. Weird.

Ardour is an non-destructive editor, this means that the original recording is not altered on disk. The only thing that touches your recording on export, is the gain setting, and any sample rate conversion. If you are concerned about quality, avoid altering the sample rate.

Have a look at this site: http://www.trygve-lie.com/blog/entry/html_5_audio_element_and

It says, Ubuntu, FireFox 3.6.3, "Will first "pause" for ~10 seconds and then play the stream. On rare occations it will not play at all. If only unsupported file format is added, player will be displayed as a grey box with a X in it."

FLAC is unsupported and is only there as a test to see if it gets supported.
